(Q): What is The Haunted Forest?
(A): The Haunted Forest is a non-profit organization dedicated to producing a fun and exciting community Halloween event. When the Audubon Society in Huntington could no longer host the event after 21 years, a group of devoted volunteers formed this organization to carry on the tradition of The Haunted Forest. This thriving event found a new home at the Catamount Family Center in Williston. It has been a wonderful place to host the Forest for the past 7 years. The Haunted Forest is an extraordinary event combining outdoor theater, special effects, the magic of the night forest, and the mystical popularity of Halloween. Guests are led by mysterious guides through a dark forest path lined with over 1,000 Jack-O-Lanterns. Along the way, they witness approximately 11 Halloween-themed performances, that range in their entertainment from scary to funny to artistic.
(Q): If my ticket says 7pm, will I get right in the Forest at that time?
(A): If your tickets says 7pm, you should expect to enter the forest anytime between 7pm and 8pm. We encourage guests to arrive anywhere from fifteen minutes EARLY to fifteen minutes LATE for the time on their ticket. You will line up in a large tent according to what time your ticket says, and groups of about 25 will be led into the forest every few minutes. While we constantly manage the Forest over walkie-talkie, there are sometimes delays in our all-volunteer operations. We appreciate your patience!
(Q): How long will it take to get through the Forest?
(A): It should take a little over 1 hour once you enter the forest.
(Q): I have a small child. Do you recommend the shows for him/her?
(A): Clearly this depends on the child. We recommend that children under the age of 8 years should attend the matinee performance on Saturday afternoons, which is geared towards young children and is not scary. The matinee is interactive and is a completely different show than the evening performance. The evening performances are really intended for guests age 8 and older. Having said that, we know 9 year-olds who love the matinee and 5 year-olds who love the evening show, so it largely depends on your judgment as their guardian based on your particular child. As always, we are a family event that is centered around the word "haunted", not "horror". There is no gore in the evening show. However, simply walking the trails in the dark or the ghost stories told at particulat scenes can be a bit frightening for some children. Thus, we have created the matinee as an alternative option for younger children.
(Q): Is the forest handicapped accessible?
(A): Unfortunately, no. This is an outdoor event over trails that are covered with tree roots, rocks, and the like and may even be muddy. Due to this, it is impossible to make it handicapped accessible. For those with sensitivities to flashing lights, there is a strobe in use briefly during one scene of the evening performance. We are seeking grant funding for sign-language interpretation of the show.
(Q): How should I expect to dress during the show I attend?
(A): Please make sure you dress warmly. This is an outdoor event in Vermont in late October and the weather can certainly be chilly. In the event of poor weather, such as rain, the show will still go on, so please dress accordingly. You should dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes or boots suitable for the woods. We strongly advise boots that help to keep you warm and dry as you walk the trails.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE HAUNTED FOREST IS A DRUG AND ALCOHOL-FREE EVENT!
